چکیده

A general circulation ocean model has been used to study the formation and propagation mechanisms of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)-generated temperature anomalies along the pathway of the North Atlantic Current (NAC). The NAO-like wind forcing generates temperature anomalies in the upper 440 m which propagate along the pathway of the NAC in general agreement with the observations. The analysis of individual components of the ocean heat budget reveals that the anomalies are primarily generated by the wind stress anomaly induced oceanic heat transport divergence. After their generation they are advected with the mean current. Surface heat uxes anomalies account for only 1/3 of the total temperature changes. Along the pathway of the North Atlantic Current temperature anomalies of opposite signs are formed in the rst and second halves of the pathway, a pattern that we call the North Atlantic Dipole (NAD). The response of the ocean depends fundamentally on Rt = (L=v)= , the ratio between the time it takes for anomalies to propagate along the NAC ((L=v) 10 years) compared to the forcing period . We nd that for NAO-periods shorter than 4 years (Rt > 1) the response in the subpolar region is mainly determined by the local forcing. For NAO-periods longer than 32 years (Rt < 1), however, the SST anomalies in the northeastern part of the NAD become controlled by ocean advection. In the subpolar region maximal amplitudes of the temperature response are found for intermediate (decadal) periods (Rt 1) where the propagation of temperature anomalies constructively interferes with the local forcing. A comparison of the NAO-generated propagating temperature anomalies with those found in observations will be discussed.

Subduction of Decadal North Pacific Temperature Anomalies: Observations and Dynamics

Observations of oceanic temperature in the upper 400 m reveal decadal signals that propagate in the thermocline along lines of constant potential vorticity from the ventilation region in the central North Pacific to approximately 188N in the western Pacific. The propagation path and speed are well described by the geostrophic mean circulation and by a model of the ventilated thermocline. The ap...

Propagation of North Pacific interdecadal subsurface temperature anomalies in an ocean GCM

Propagation of subsurface North Pacific interdecadal variations is investigated with an ocean general circulation model forced by observed sea surface temperature anomalies. Subsurface temperature anomalies subducted in the central subtropical North Pacific take a more westward pathway than a passive “temperature” tracer and reach the western boundary to the north of the bifurcation latitude. T...

Analysis of heat waves temporal fluctuation in North - West region of Iran and their relationship with greenhouse gases and global land-ocean temperature anomalies

The heat waves today are one of the most important climatic hazards in the world. According to many scientists, the Severe and frequent occurrence of heat waves in recent years has been due to the emission of greenhouse gases and consequent increased global warming. The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in the frequency and intensity of heat waves As well as their relationship wit...
